CURRENT POSITION

  • Medical Social Worker & Transplant Coordinator at Muljibhai Patel Society for Research in Nephro-Urology, ISO 9001:2000 (BVQI) Nadiad from 1st January-1984 .

  • I am a member of our hospital’s multidisciplinary team that takes care of all kinds of renal diseases. I lead the Department of Medical Social Work & Transplant Co-ordinator. My department is responsible for looking after the psychosocial aspects of the patient’s life, which are brought to the attention of the team. Completing all formalities according to The Human Organ Transplant Act – 1994 regulation is one of the major function. Our hospital exclusively treats patients suffering from urogenital tract disease. Chronic illness has long term implications for both patients and their family members and caretakers. My aim in working as a Medical Social Worker is directed towards relieving financial as well as emotional stress.

MY RESPONSIBILITIES ARE:

  1. Patient advocacy
  2. Psychosocial assessment at different time-points in a patient’s ongoing care and treatment
  3. Personal Counseling Service to individuals, families and groups on issues commonly seen in our practice such as:
    • Anxiety and fears associated with renal transplantation.
    • Stresses created by prolonged or repeated hospital admission.
    • Patients’ decisions not to commence or to withdraw from treatment.
    • Terminal illness & bereavement
  4. To liaise with Charitable Organizations & fund collection. My department has raised more than Rs.21 Crores approximately (US $3,00,000 approximately) for patients’ treatment till date. We also maintain all the books of accounts in our department in conjunction with the finance section of the hospital.
  5. Research
    Apart from day to day work with patients I am involved in following research projects:

    • Psychosocial problems of patients and their families suffering from “End Stage Kidney Failure.”
    • Psychosocial problems of kidney donors.
    • Quality of Life assessment by SF36, of patients who are on maintenance haemodialysis.
  6. Patient and family education: I am very actively conducting Patient Education Program for patients undergoing kidney transplantation.
